Why does Creative Commons Exist?

Below is a timeline of mostly United States’ historical events ,which situate copyright law alongside events that arose because of the tensions Lessig and other founders of Creative Commons, identified. Namely, that the internet, with ubiquitous access, the ability to share more quickly and freely, and collaborative ethos made copyright restrictions burdensome to those who wished to share their work at a global scale.

CC licensing creates pathways for creators to make their works freely available with and without restrictions depending on the license applied to work. How many CC-licensed works are available today?

There are over two billion CC-licensed works with the following types of licenses (“About”, Creative Commons)

  • CC0 (e.g. Public domain);
  • CC BY (attributes the creator);
  • CC BY-SA (attributes the creator, adaptations shared under identical terms);
  • CC BY-NC (attributes the author, non-commercial uses permitted);
  • CC BY-NC-SA (attributes the author, non-commercial uses, adaptations shared under identical terms);
  • CC BY-ND (attributes the author, redistribute without changes to content, medium, or format);
  • CC BY-NC-ND (attributes author, non-commercial uses permitted, redistribute without changes to content, medium, or format);

How can you get involved with CC and the Global Network?

If you wish to get involved with Creative Commons or the Creative Commons Global Network users and creators have multiple options:

  • users may choose to exclusively use openly licensed media when creating presentations;
  • users may choose to become creators when modifying openly licensed content;
  • creators may choose to use creative commons licenses to allow others to use and share their work more widely;
  • both users and creators may join a chapter of the CCGN within their country.
